All For One and One For All

The spine as a whole operates as a functional unit. Each vertebra can affect its neighbor and one portion of the spine may affect or damage other areas of the body. Research has shown that when a segment in the spine is fused, either through degeneration or surgically, spinal segments immediately above and below the fusion are more likely to experience accelerated degeneration as a result of the altered motion.
Many chiropractors and technique educators teach models that evaluate specific relationships between the vertebra such as the Lovett Brother Relationship (pictured above). According to this theory, each segment has a counterpart mirror that needs to be evaluated if there is a problem with its related segment.
Either way, HealthSource chiropractors assess and restore movement in all segments, not just the ones you feel pain in. Often times, arthritis and degeneration develop in the absence of pain, so we focus on the restoration of movement. It is very difficult to have arthritis develop if mobility and stability are maintained around a joint.
