How Can My Gut Be Leaking?

Leaky Gut is a condition where the permeability of the intestines increases, usually as a result of poor diet, anxiety, medication use, and a disruption of the normal balance. An optimal functioning intestinal tract typically allows only certain food molecules and nutrients to pass through while keeping out many of the bad, pro-inflammatory causing substances.
Over time and with repeated exposure, these channels become damaged, malfunction and allow other bulkier substances through like the milk protein - lactose, wheat protein - gluten, or other bacteria and yeasts that can drive inflammation. Some people’s bodies may even recognize some of these molecules as foreign and trigger a response from the immune system causing a hypersensitivity reaction or even an “auto-immune” disorder. Other symptoms can range from a feeling of bloating, or abdominal discomfort (especially with common trigger foods), poor digestion or digestive disorders, chronic systemic inflammation, or certain auto-immune disorders.
Here are a couple of things you can do to help correct Leaky Gut Syndrome. Eliminate sugar, processed foods (especially those made with wheat), dairy, and alcohol. These foods can be damaging to your good bacteria, feed the bad bacteria and yeast, and can be very pro-inflammatory to your body. You can also increase your consumption of healthy fats, bone broth and fermented, pre- and probiotic (good bacteria promoting) foods like kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha, as well as routinely take our HealthSource Probiotic supplement.
